Many people are familiar with Tesuque, New Mexico, but lesser known Rio en Medio, just a few miles up the road, shares many of the same features. A small community of roughly 50 households in Santa Fe County sited at 7,116 ft, Rio en Medio is best known for the Rio En Medio Trail, a day hike about 14 miles north of Santa Fe. A few miles up the trail, you will encounter Little Chasm Falls— a wonderful place to sit and listen to the waterfall.
If you look, you will also find big, beautiful chunks of mica and quartz along the trail. For more information about the hike, check out REI’s NM Hiking Project here.
After the semi-difficult 6.5 mile, or so, hike, you might be very hungry and we recommend you get in your car and immediately drive to Tesuque Village Market. Tesuque Village Market (TVM) is all about the location and the large open-air dinning area. It is truly wonderful to sit out on the porch with friends and family and enjoy a few hours of food and drinks. This is not a place for a “quick bite.” If you are looking for that, shop TVM’s grocery, which has an assortment of drinks and snacks to-go. Some of our favorite items on the menu include: Huevos Rancheros, Taco Truck Tacos and the TVM nachos. Currently, the restaurant is only offering take-out, but we hope that the patio will be open soon.
